Show me the Money!

Posted by Matt on August 26, 2009 | Share It

Okay then – here’s today’s little teaser.

Former England International and Premier League regular Sol Campbell leaves Portsmouth at the end of last season. The former Arsenal and Tottenham man has won all manner of trophies in his career, so you’d think even at his age, Prem sides would be queuing up to get his signature and benefit from all that top-flight experience.

Spurs Manager Harry Redknapp even admitted that were he in charge of any other club than Tottenham – where Sol is a hate figure -  he’d have snapped him up in an instant.

Come on. Guess. Where’s this hot free agent gone?

How about Notts County in League Two?

Yep that’s right. 6,000 fans a week in the Football League’s basement division – within the last few years they’ve flirted closely with relegation to the Conference, and yet big Sol reckons that’s his best bet.

I wonder why. At 34, a five-year playing contract at a rumoured £60k per-week probably swayed him. That’s likely to be some three or four times the combined weekly wage of the entire squad there. Ridiculous.

“Notts County are a club with a lot of ambition and I want to be a part of that,” Sol says.

A club with a lot of money, you mean?

Let’s hope for the sake of the game it all goes terribly wrong, but I doubt it will.

We’re in a day and age where Joleon Lescott is worth £24 Million all of a sudden, so what do I know?

How did that take 10 years?

Well now, there’s a bit of good news.

Finally after a decade of absolute garbage, Channel 4 have decided that enough is enough – Big Brother is to be binned.

Unfortunately we’ve got the end of this series and next year’s ‘Celebrity’ version to get out of the way first.

ITV bid it farewell tonight by saying ‘It’s made household names of its contestants…’ but has it?

Jade perhaps, but that’s about it.

In 10 years.

Good riddance.

Ashes 2009: Time to Build

Posted by Matt on August 23, 2009 | Share It

So England regain the Ashes after being Australia on home soil – but in many ways it has been a series that has thrown up more questions that it answered.

Comparing it to 2005 just cannot be done – I do not think either side are as good as they were. This won’t matter to England fans, of course, and that’s fair enough. But looking, reading and listening around, it’s clear that the celebrations have been a lot more muted.

I suppose when you consider that prior to 2005 our last Ashes victory was back in 1986-87, the wild and over-the-top celebrations of four years ago are, in context, understandable. So why is it that it has not had the same kind of impact this time around?

It’s possible that, after decades of Australian dominance, the Ashes series is now competitive again and so with a lack of novelty in victory comes more relaxed a reaction – perhaps an England victory is now considering something closer to the norm than it was back then.

Personally, I’m glad that the reaction is comparatively not as insane. Back in 2005, a new England side achieved something fantastic and there was an expectation that this was going to be the dawn of something special for cricket in the country. As it was, it turned out to be by far in the pinnacle in a rather drab four years.

Looking more closely at it, though, you have to say that it’s understandable that England never kicked on. You look through the England side of 2005 and none of those players had a frame of reference with which to judge the occasion, feeling and achievement. Nothing to hold it against, nothing by way of experience given that none of them had done anything like it before.

The team of 2009 has an advantage that the likes of Strauss, Bell, Harmison etc have all achieved winning the Ashes before – and so can keep their feet on the ground. We went back to Australia in 2006-07 after winning the Ashes and got absolutely belted. I would put money here and now on saying that the same will not happen in the winter of 2010.

With further view to the 2009 series we’ve probably also got to admit we had our fair share of luck. England haven’t been without their moments of quality – masters Broad, Strauss and the like saw to that, but Australia had even more so and have come out on the losing side. Steve Harmison said after the fifth test that when a football team loses 1-0 after dominating play and possession, they’re still beaten – and that’s true enough. But Australia four of the top five run scorers in the whole series, with similar bowling figures. They had eight centurion innings in comparison to England’s two. They may well be mystified as to how they’ve missed out. Maybe it is the case that losing four out of the five coin tosses played a part? That indicates to me that far too much advantage is levied on the winning of the toss and that’s a shame for the game.

Either way – the 2009 Ashes series has seen two inconsistent sides battle out quite an entertaining series. It’s good for the sport that the little urn is now bouncing around a little more often – but where to both teams go from here?

I think it’s a more difficult question for Australia, who after this defeat have fallen to fourth in the Test Rankings - having been 1st since 2003. Some would say they’ve been in decline since winning the Ashes back in 2007. For England? They no doubt have the momentum but it’s vital that they learn from the mistakes of 2005 - it’s time to build.

I’m Deffo a Guy Who…

Loses a cricket match by 100+ runs to a GIRL…

Then takes charge in a full test match - 300+ lead into the 2nd Innings and now 6 wickets down for just over 100. Pretty good.

All in the world of gaming of course. Can’t hold a bat or throw a ball otherwise…

Also, 4-1 down to Spain as England on my FIFA 09.

Full time score? That’ll be 6-4 to England.

That’s how I rock, you know…..

Only in Football.

Hmm. Okie dokey then.

Next part of the Norwich City Saga… Let’s take this as it’s come.

Colchester smack Norwich 7-1 in their own back garden.

Norwich redeem this somewhat by winning 4-0 in the Cup.

That’s not enough - Norwich sack their Manager.

Colchester’s Manager resigns to take over at Norwich!

What on earth? Word has it that City even appointed him without holding an interview.

All very strange but there are some queer folk up in that neck of the woods, trust me, I know!

Only in football eh?
