The Boy Can Still Play

Posted by Matt on October 22, 2008 | Share It

Regular readers of my humble blog will know that I’m a bit of a fan of David Beckham. He’s really won me round this past year or two with his attitude and professionalism - that, and the fact that you have to say that he comes across as a really nice guy, unfortunately. No one likes perfection!!

Anyway, word’s come out today that he’s to join AC Milan on loan once his LA Galaxy games and finished around Christmas time - I think this is fantastic news for Beckham. There’s no doubting the fact that Fabio Capello didn’t really include him too heavily in his England plans just recently and I suppose that’s fine, given the level he’s playing at now, and the fact that he’s getting on a bit.

His experience for England is, for my reckoning, absolutely priceless, and if he can also get a bit of sharpness back by playing at a much, much better standard of football then I think everyone wins. Plus the fact that he clearly just loves playing his football.

One or two have suggested that he’ll now get ‘found out’ as the has-been that he apparently is, but I think that’s a bit harsh. He’d still easily grace the Premiership for my money, and players of his character and experience are just too few and far between.

More Toys Outta The Pram…

Has the world gone utterly, utterly mad?

I just thought it was England’s Premiership players who were the overpaid pansies of this world?

Take a look at the whole Kris Boyd saga developing over the last week, and you’ll see I got that analysis wrong. After being left on the bench during Scotland’s 0-0 draw at home to Norway, Boyd has vowed never to play for his country again, as long as they remain under the management of current Chief George Burley.

Burley had drawn the ire of the player in his post-match press conference by telling a radio station that Boyd’s omission had been down to the fact that he’d not proved himself in any great form for club side Rangers. Quite why this upset Boyd, I don’t know – and to declare retirement over it is just ludicrous and exactly the kind of immature, dummy-spitting attitude we’ve come to expect of our current professional footballers.

If you aren’t in great form for your club, you aren’t going to feature heavily for your country – I would’ve thought that was plainly obvious and understandable to everybody, except Boyd it would seem. There are people who would sacrifice everything just for the chance to be in the squad for their country – and yet Boyd feels justified in this little stunt?

Let’s look at Jamie Carragher – LEGITIMATELY England’s best centre-half. ALWAYS first-choice for his club, Liverpool – one of top clubs in England and the world, and perennially a Man of the Match candidate – could he get a game for his country? No.. He was constantly overlooked time and time again and in my mind, rightfully retired from International football ALTOGETHER, regardless of any future managerial changes. For me, a perfectly justified action, and one I fully agree with.

Boyd and Carragher – two worlds apart in so many respects.

300 Not Out

Posted by Matt on October 10, 2008 | Share It

Just thought I’d drop a line to say that we recently surpassed 300 posts in this little blog arena of mine (303 to be exact).

Not bad even if I do say so myself - and the strangest thing is that people are still coming!

It Could Happen…

Bit of sad news coming out today that footballer Geoff Horsfield is suffering from testicular cancer.

Normally I’d say that this news is no sadder because he’s famous than it would be were it to concern your average Joe, but cases like this do help to highlight the dangers concerned.

Caught a great quote from Geoff himself saying that he’d urge everyone to check for lumps regularly, adding that ‘No one can afford to think ‘It could’t ever happen to me…’ - And how true.

He’s a bit of a legend in local circles - best wishes for a full recovery sir!
