Sad or Stupid?
The title of this post is perhaps a bit unfair - there’s little doubt that the fire that has all but gutted one of the country’s most famous piers is a sad affair - but I can’t help but be reminded that we’re well and truly in 2008 when I heard that it is believed the fire started in an area containing deep fat fryers…
Some would retort that if all those years ago, people would insist on building such landscapes on such relatively unsafe and unsound structures and with such materials, then it stands to reason they’re going to burn to the ground. But I don’t really agree.
I’m not stupid enough to think that fire is only a phenomenon of this day and age - of course there were pier fires in the past. But how many were started through general carelessness? I’m being a bit unfair and jumping to conclusions, I suppose, but it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that one of the UK’s landmarks has been destroyed because someone was too lazy or stupid - it fits far to comfortably with where we’re going as a society these days.
I feel for the new owners of the pier, who have at least shown remarkable strength in coming out and saying they’ll do whatever it takes to return the site to its former glory… Let’s just hope that does happen and we don’t see another nail in the coffin of one of the only remaining things in Britain that epitomises Britishness.
But that’s another politically incorrect point for another day….

Finger Pointing
It seems like everyone connected with the England Cricket side at the moment is passing the buck and pointing the finger.
Let’s face it, after finishing the NZ set of fixtures is pretty poor fashion, the performances against the South Africans have been pretty average and annoyingly inconsistent. Don’t misunderstand me, the squad is one we know has a load of quality - but you don’t make a living on potential and I just think it’s about time that established players started stepping up and earning their place in the side.
It seems at the moment that an England innings only really livens up once KP is in, and once he’s out, be it for 6 or 106, they fall apart a bit. The last Test against South Africa was pretty good proof of that. There just aren’t enough runs coming from the top of the order, and it’s just not good enough at this level.
Vaughan is moaning about the selection, the selectors are saying ‘How rude’, and the entire team is in a rather sorry state. There was an ‘extensive review’ of English cricket after the last Ashes series (5-0 whitewash if you needed reminding) but that doesn’t seem to have changed much at all. The team is not without its talent, but there’s no ‘I’ in team and it is about time they all pulled together and started winning something on a consistent basis…
